Survey
A national survey ran from autumn 2007 to spring 2008 on the University of Sheffield music department’s website.  Anyone who has anything to say about folk singing was encouraged to participate. This generated nearly 200 useful responses and has provided great insight inot the attitudes and activities of people who participate in folk singing today.

Sheffield Diaries
I ran a trial of the proposed diary project sampling 15 participants for a fortnight in the Spring of 2007.  I have had most returned which is a fabulous response rate (thank you everyone) and these are wonderfully rich in data, a mixture of factual and opinion based content with quantitative and qualitative detail. The main diary project ran for two months in October/November 2007 and 23 responses have been returned. These have provided a highly detailed level of personal information and are proving very useful in the construction of my thesis. A number of people said they had enjoyed and benefitted from being involved in the process, finding that looking critically at what they did informed their practice and behaviour. Thank you to everyone who took part in the diary project.

Whitby Discussion
A fascinating group discussion regarding participation in singing communities was held during Whitby Folk Week 2007.  Thank you to every one who attended, your input is greatfully received.  For more information about the festival where this discussion took place visit www.whitbyfolk.co.uk. A copy of the resulting report can be downloaded above.

Interviews
A number of interviews were conducted in August/September 2007 to generate data for a paper for the 'Musical Particiption' conference run by Sempre in October 2007. A copy of this paper can be downloaded above. Interviews and informal discussions with some of the people who have completed diaries and other notable characters are continually being carried out.
